What does PBL look like in Elementary School?
At Washington, we implement STEAM through PBL that incorporates student voice and leadership in fostering the conditions for students to be critical and solution-oriented thinkers while working to better our community. It is not a program, but a mindset that's grounded in our guiding principles- We Lead, We Innovate, We Empower, We Care. Through PBL, content knowledge is interwoven, layered and centered around dilemmas and/or opportunities that affect the community that we serve. Our team has trained over the last decade and has been supported by the New Tech Network and Joe Truss Inc. Each classroom was designed for Project Based Teaching and Learning! See Class Renderings
Students have the opportunity to showcase their projects twice a year- in the Fall's, "Messy Middle" and at our Spring community STEAM Exhibition showcase:
PBL supported through Creative Writing
Each week, our students 1st-6th dive into a creative writing adventure that sparks imagination and builds confidence. Through thoughtful prompts, collaborative storytelling, and playful exploration of language, young writers learn to express their ideas with clarity and flair. Students have the chance to dream big, experiment boldly, and discover the joy of turning thoughts into stories. It’s more than writing practice—it’s a space where creativity thrives and every student’s voice shines.
