Our Murals
To walk our Washington campus is to walk in beauty. Colorful murals tell the story of our school community. Commissioning each of the murals that make up our school has been intentional in ensuring that we curate a space with art that is impactful, rebellious, uplifting and rooted in love.
Lotería del Barrio, 2023-2024
Lotería del Barrio was developed in partnership with Washington Elementary Students and Dr. Luis-Genaro Garcia, professor of Art Education and his students from, Barrio Art in the Community, at CSU, Sacramento.
Mural by Gabriel Romo, 2024
Four students in deep meditation who represent Mexica, Japanese, Lakota and Black ancestors. Some of the details in their clothes, hair, symbolism and placement of the feathers on the mural were done with the input of our families. The students radiate peace within themselves as they draw on their inter-generational and ancestral wisdom. On the wall across from them are their symbolic spirit animals-a pup, a cub, a hummingbird and a rabbit.
The Elders, Los Abuelos, 2026
Los Abuelos/the Elders of the Washington Community by artist Gabriel Romo
This mural pays homage to the elders in our Washington Elem. neighborhood as the knowledge keepers and memory holders. Everyday heroes are connected to our school community and they are us as our parents, grandparents and neighbors.
